Davidson observes consolidation efforts at western strategic distribution platform

By Annette Silva, DLA Distribution San Joaquin, Calif., Public Affairs

Defense Logistics Agency Distribution commander Army Brig. Gen. Susan A. Davidson visited DLA Distribution San Joaquin, Calif., to observe consolidation efforts and tour both sites at DLA's western Strategic Distribution Platform.

Driven by the need to reduce operating costs and overhead, DLA Distribution San Joaquin was selected to consolidate its operations from two sites to one. This plan was initiated in November 2011. Execution began in March and the center is on target to complete the consolidation operation by the end of fiscal year 2013. All stocks and material housed at the Sharpe, Calif., site will be moved to the Tracy, Calif., site.

Learning further details about consolidation efforts and current operations, Davidson received the command overview presented by DLA Distribution San Joaquin's commander Marine Corps Col. Adrian Burke along with the senior leadership and special staff. After the brief, she had the opportunity to meet with DLA site directors within the installation.

Davidson met the DLA Distribution San Joaquin Tracy, Calif., workforce on her walking tour of mission operations. Areas of focus included small parcel receiving, mechanized storage and packing, foreign military sales, the freight terminal, bulk storage, and the specialized area of the flu vaccination storage mission. Her Tracy site tour concluded with the consolidation and containerization point, the distribution training lab, the "cuttables" warehouses which include items such as spool and wire stock, and the unitized group rations mission.

At the Sharpe, Calif., site, Davidson saw, first-hand, the progress of the consolidation efforts and the complexities of a multi-installation consolidation effort.

"This is a unique but necessary operation for DLA," said Burke. "Upon completion, 10 warehouses equaling 9.3 million cubic feet and three open storage areas, 500,000 square feet, that once contained over 19,000 occupied stock locations will have been emptied."
